Not Your Typical Bondi Beach Pad

For our latest Home Tour, we had the pleasure of stepping into the home of Australian-born interior designer Sophie Davies. Known for her effortless fusion of European tradition and contemporary design, Sophie’s Bondi Beach home is a testament to her talent for creating inviting, light-filled spaces. Throughout the tour, our bedding, towels, and dining collections perfectly complement her unique aesthetic, offering a glimpse into her refined yet approachable style - not your usual beach pad. Take the tour.

Tell us a bit about yourself and what you do.

I’m Sophie Davies, I am an Interior Designer. I have a small interior design firm that focuses on mainly residential interiors but we also love commercial projects. In addition to our interior design work we sell our own furniture and lighting.

How would you describe the aesthetic of your practice?

European, traditional but also contemporary.

What does creativity mean to you and where do you source your inspiration?

Creativity means thinking outside the box for me - entering into a very exciting world where anything is possible. I get inspired by nature and my surroundings, books, travel and TV.

How would you describe the aesthetic of your home?

Light, contemporary and happy with elements of the past woven in.

Who lives there?

My husband, son and I.

Tell us about the process, what design features you wish to incorporate?

Each project is different so the process varies slightly but with a renovation the first thing I start with is looking at all the existing features and deciding what we want to maintain or restore, then it is a process of elimination before we inject the new. However prior to this I digest the clients brief and agree on an aesthetic for the project which is decided through an analysis of location, the building and the clients project requirements. I think a good floorplan is very important and decoratively the juxtaposition of positive and negative space. In terms of design features I think light and the play of it throughout a project is really important along with form, colour, proportion, contrasts and balance.

What are some of your most loved elements?

The powder room is my favourite room in the house. I love the Rosso Nuvola marble on the floor and on the benchtop. The hallway and the play of light on the marmorino walls along with the scale of our bedroom, the vistas and the natural light throughout.

What architecture and design styles are you inspired by?

Palladio x Scarpa and everything in between! I do like symmetry and therefore Georgian architecture but also an element of surprise so Arts and Craft houses, I appreciate a lot of different styles just done well!

What makes a house feel like a home to you?

How unique it is to the client and ensuring nothing is too perfect.

What does the term ‘luxury’ mean to you?

Space, time and convenience.

What are your daily rituals?

I need more but going for a walk in the morning on my own and getting a coffee is definitely a favourite or having a hot bath at night time. I meditate when I can but I’m out of practice at the moment!
